Neon DIY projects

14 Jun

Being a child of the 80s, I have always had a not-so-secret love for all things neon. I think it stems from the the first outfit I owned which I loved with a fiery passion – it was a hot pink top with flouro yellow stars on it and a matching skirt with lots of frills and layers which was flouro yellow with hot pink stars on it. Amazing. It made my 7 year old self very happy.

So I’m really happy to see so many neon related DIY projects on my favourite blogs and popping up on Pinterest. If you fancy getting stuck in to a very bright crafty project, here are a few of my favourites:

DIY Colourblock Bag from Say Yes to Hoboken

Wood and Neon Lanyard Necklaces from Martha

Neon and gold notebooks from Eat Sleep Cuddle

DIY neon toe shoes from Green Wedding Shoes

If you are looking for a few ideas for the bank holiday, why not try making one of these projects?

Create a cake (or donut!) stand using old records – I love this idea! Via Bubby and Bean.

Experiment with Papier Mache! I haven’t done this since I was a kid, but My Little Fabric has a very grown up project on their site…

Decoupage Inspiration

16 Mar

Ever since I saw Nova & Lorsten’s cool Mills & Boon decoupage products at The New Vintage Event in Brixton I’ve been looking for a way to use it in a project. We have two very boring Ikea coffee tables at home which are starting to look a bit tatty so my flatmate and I are going to give it a try. Meanwhile here are the ideas that have been inspiring me on Pinterest.

I’m mildly obsessed with butterflies so using this wrapping paper would be right up my street.

A few ideas I have spotted recently…

I love this vintage suitcase stand on Shabby, Chic and Charming. I have been really struggling to get hold of the legs I want for the suitcase project I still haven’t finished (as soon as I get the legs I’ll be done, so hopefully I will post it soon!). This is a neat alternative – using a luggage stand to put the suitcase on. The only problem is that I think it might be too high for what I want it for, but if I don’t find legs in the next week, I will definitely be giving this a go!

Another great idea for old luggage – turn it into a charging station! Seen on Design*Sponge.

I love this simple but beautiful leather case for the Kindle Fire. Seen on Momtastic.

Getting organised

17 Feb

By far the trickiest part about moving into our new flat has been trying to decide where everything should go. Whenever I look at design blogs or people’s houses on Pinterest, I always notice how neat and tidy everything is. Now, I know that if you are going to have your apartment shot for a popular blog, you’re going to want to tuck things away to make everything look prettier, but they just seem so… organised.

One of the quickest (and cheapest!) ways to make your things look better is to make it look organised. Sure, sometimes you see ‘messy but cool looking’ flats, but if you’re not a stylist and you try to replicate this look, chances are it will just look messy.

I have written about my organisation obsession before, but somehow it never seems to make it in to practice. Well, this is a late new year’s resolution – I will have a place for everything and everything will be in its place by June of this year. We’re still unpacking and picking up the odd bits of furniture, so I’m giving myself a little bit of time, but I am determined. I’ve already found a neat way of storing things like cling film and recycling bags under the sink, but I’ve countered this efficiency with overspilling grocery bags and Tupperware.

My stuff never looks like this. But it will! Via KevinandAmanda

The company I currently work for published this book, Banish Clutter Forever, a few years ago, so I have ordered myself a copy and am going to be working through the flat, room by room, until – by June – I will never have one of those “have you seen my masking tape/jewellery box/scissors/bills/etc” conversations again…

I don't think they have the "WHERE ARE THE NAIL CLIPPERS?" shouting up the stairs questions...

I’ll post updates in the coming months and post some before and after photos as well, so you can see my progress, but what I would love to know is – what are your tips? How do you keep organised? What blogs do you read? Any help or advice you can give me would be so appreciated!

Valentine Ideas

10 Feb

It’s hard not to be inspired when there are so many lovely gift and styling ideas out there at the minute around Valentine’s Day.  Here’s another little round up of some ideas I have spotted recently – I hope they inspire you, too!

A DIY tutorial for making an accordion card via Martha Stewart.

A lovely tutorial from How About Orange on creating edible paint – you can decorate plates or cups or whatever and eat the designs! Yummy (and pretty!)

Give your friends a little treat with these decorated matchboxes stuffed with sweets. Via Sweet Mabel.

This is a WONDERFUL tutorial for making heart shaped cake stands – I am definitely going to be giving this a try! Via Say Yes to Hoboken.

Staying with the pink and red theme, but on a much ‘manlier’ note – how about these meat biscuits spotted on the Whipped Bake Shop on etsy! What a cute idea (but you had better have a steady hand!)

What are you planning this Valentine’s Day?

Wedding invitation inspiration

17 Jan

Last year I blogged about putting together the save-the-date cards for my wedding using free photo editing software and images sourced from license free websites. I loved our Scrabble based cards, even if they did have completely the wrong date on them (luckily no one thought I wanted to get an RSVP from them in 20111).

This month I am starting to think about the invitations themselves.  I am thinking of having a bit of A3, folded in half, then into four, so it folds out and out with more information and pretty pictures on each part (can you imagine that or is that description really confusing? I know what I mean!). I have also been scouring Pinterest for inspiration. There are so many great ideas out there!

How cute is this!? via Style Me Pretty

I love the map on this invite from Suann Song. However, although I love the look of lots of individual postcard sized papers, I worry that people would lose them (what I would do)

Oh Martha. I love you. These are wedding programmes, but what a great invite idea.

Unlike the save-the-dates, which can be really basic and straightforward, the invite needs to have a lot more information on it – hotel suggestions, maps, gift list information (v important, that one!).  But how do you fit all that information on to one invite? A lot of people swear by wedding websites (which are easy and free to create), but I’m still not convinced. What do you think?

Some of the ideas I’ve been pinning over the last couple of weeks:

DIY globe garlands – how cute would these be with some fairy lights in them as well?  Via Poppytalk

Gold Toe Flats – SO simple and what a great way to refresh any old flats you have lying about. Via Say Yes to Hoboken

40 amazing edible gifts (how good does the Peppermint Hot Fudge sound!?) from The Kitchn

Wine bottle light – P and I started making this on Sunday, but it turned out the drill bit we hadn’t wasn’t that good for glass so we have ordered the new piece and I’ll write another blog about this soon. Via Wit and Whistle

Another map-related idea (P likes a good map so am on the look out for mappish presents) – we met, we married, we live – so sweet! Via Minimoz

Have you seen any great craft projects lately? I would love to do a Christmas craft round-up for decorating the house and Christmas tree… Post your ideas in the comments!

Ideas for craft projects

19 Oct

As usual, I have been spending far more time than I should on Pinterest. This week, the craft projects that caught my eye were:

Bird stencilling (inspired by this and Hannah’s card post, I created some bird-on-a-branch cards and blogged about it earlier this week).

Vintage ruler clothes rack. I LOVE this – P & I found a whole load of vintage rulers at a flea market recently, and we were so tempted to buy them, but had no idea what to use them for. Now I know! If I spot them again, I’ll definitely pick some up.

These hanging vases made from old lightbulbs are AMAZING. How great would these look at an outdoor wedding?

I’m really looking for some low-cost Christmas presents this year, and I love these salt-dough ornaments, with sweet little stamps or stencils on them. Cute! I can’t find the exact post that these come from, but they were created by Marley and Lockyer, who also have a lovely blog.

What has been inspiring you this week? Post your links and ideas in the comments!
